NAPPY/DIAPER RASH

There are several causes of diaper rash. These two links can help give you clearer more detailed information:

Wikipedia - Irritant Diaper Dermatitis
Chealth - Diaper rash

In our case it began with what seemed like a sudden onset of a mild running tummy. The buns poop which had always been yellow had become green, slimy, foamy and very frequent. The bun would usually poop once a day or once every two to three days was now pooping several times a day, sometimes more than once in an hour. The bun is exclusively breast fed so fortunately these changes brought no new odors with them.

The buns bottom was bright red and swollen and she would scream at the slightest touch.

Possible Causes:
  1. Prolonged exposure to moisture from the running tummy?
  2. Changed diapers from Huggies Gold to Pampers Premium Care?
  3. Using baby wipes?
  4. Friction from the numerous diaper changes could have irritated the skin.

OUR SOLUTION:
  • To clean her we began standing her in her baby tub and pouring warm water on her.
  • Then dab very lightly with a towel to remove excess moisture and let air dry - put towels under baby during air drying as she/he might suddenly poop or pee again, if it should happen rinse again with the warm water.
  • We got some bicarbonate of soda, put some in the water we use to clean the bun during diaper changes. We use warm water with the bicarbonate of soda and cotton wool to clean the babys bottom.
  • Once dry we slathered on Vaseline gently, expect crying.
  • Fortunately we had a few Huggies on hand so we switched back to them, then to Absorbers and then Farai's.
  • Change often and don't leave the baby wet.
  • Baby will be in pain so expect crying, you are not doing him or her any favors by changing less frequently to avoid pain and crying. Changing the baby often will keep him/her dry and aid with faster healing.
  • The next day swelling had gone down but bottom was still bright red.
  • Went to the pharmacy and they recommended  Fissan Bum Cream.
Ingredients:
Aqua, Petrolatum, Paraffinum Liquidum, Zinc Oxide, Propylene Glycol, Methoxy PEG-22 Dodecyl Glycol Copolymer, Cetyl Palmitate, PEG -22  Dodecyl Glycol Copolymer, Hydrated Silica, Hydroxyoctacosanyl Hydroxystearate, Allantoin, D-Panthenol, Parfum, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Tetrasodium EDTA, Citric Acid.

  • Its a cream so you have to rub it on. Which of course means more contact with the sore spot and more pain but it all leads to healing.
  • Whilst in SPAR we saw this spray:
 Ingredients:
Aqua Purificata (water), Paraffinum Perliquidium, Emulsifier, Prunus Amygdalus, Zinc Oxide, Dimethicone, Stabiliser, Preservative, Perfume, L-Carnosine, Panthenol, Tocopherol.

The spray is easier to apply for obvious reasons.

Though went to the SPAR Brands website and didn't find this spray. We bought it at the SPAR at SAM LEVY'S VILLAGE.

Use the bum/barrier cream/spray each and every time you change the baby! Helps with faster healing.

Bicarbonate Of Soda Sitz Bath:

  • After her (or at any time) we would let the bun soak in shallow warm water with bicarbonate of Soda in it.
  • Its soothing and healing.
