Dealing With A Natural 4c Hair Baby/Toddler

It can be a bit challenging dealing with a tiny person who does not want to and does not care about hair. Getting them to sit still is a battle. It takes a lot of patience! Sometimes we have two hairstyles or half a hairstyle.

Don't force them. Don't make her/him hate their hair or getting their hair done. If she gets too fussy and clearly doesn't want to sit still, just let them go. Try doing simple hairstyles that don't take too long. Or do their hair whilst they are sleeping. My toddler won’t sit still, sleeping doesn’t help, she turns over or wakes up, TV doesn’t help... Some kids are more patient and just sit through it...

To deep condition her hair I:
Monday
-
wash and section, braids or hair bands.
Tuesday morning
-
use spray bottle to get her hair wet and I put in the conditioner
Tuesday mid-morning
-
I wash her hair and then use the LOC/”LCO” method.

Make sure their hair is damp when you handle it. Try to finger detangle and minimise comb usage.

I use the same products on my hair I use on hers/theirs. She is two now.

Threading On Natural 4c Hair

Threading is a good and effective protective style. I put in threading that I wear out as an everyday style, like 2-3 weeks+. Just make sure that your hair is in good shape before you thread it. I use the loc method to get and seal in as much moisture as possible into my hair.

I use the LCO method, but not in the correct order.

LOC – “LCO”:
Liquid
-
Water. Drench your hair.
Cream
-
I use a leave in conditioner.
Oil
-
I use either, coconut oil, olive oil or shea butter.

I section my hair and let it air dry in 4+ braids

I use thread/wool I get from the super market for a dollar. The wool/thread used to knit. For extra protection you can oil the wool a bit so it does not draw the moisture from your hair. Allso becareful how you knot the ends.

Here are some pics of the threading I do in my hair. Some say they look like locks to them? Maybe when they reach the two week mark and I’ve probably wet them by then.

Here are a few pics of my threaded hair:

Okra On Dry 4c Hair

I tried okra out as a conditioner. You can use it to deep condition then wash it out or use it as a leave in conditioner or as a hair gel. I think it would work well as a daily moisturizer.

One of my main problems with my hair is that it cannot retain moisture at all. Even if I condition with a store bought conditioner it feels crunchy and dry even after oiling. But days after having washed out the okra and oiling it is  still moisturised and doesn't feel crunchy and a lot of it isn't breaking off.

I sliced the okra into rings covered it with water and boiled it. I strained it and put the "slime" in my hair. I didn't mix the okra with anything else. I put on plastic shower cap and a beanie on top. Spent a few hours then removed the shower cap and beanie. I let my hair air dry. I washed out the okra after two days. Days later it still feels good.

There was no smell. My hair wasn't sticky or tacky or flaky after the okra dried.

I hope to do the okra once a week.

Not Enough Growth?

I haven't had a lot of growth. Mainly because I haven't been treating it as I should. I have seen some growth but would probably see more if I took proper care of it.

Have a kid turning 2 in a little bit. Plus a two month old!
So don't know when I'll have the time.

Length Retention - 4c Hair

Moisture:
  • Yes, you will get a lot of reversion but if your hair is short and you are trying to grow it out.
  • I feel that's a small price to pay.
  • For the health of your hair it needs moisture.
  • Avoid products that lock moisture out and products that strip it.
  • Our hair is different so each person will have a different reaction to products so find those that work for you.
  • Water, water, water!

Patience:
  • Do not handle it roughly.
  • When unbraiding or detangling please take your time otherwise you will be breaking off your hair and you will wonder why its not growing.
  • It will be growing but it you break off the hair you wont see any progress.

Slippage:
  • When braiding or unbraiding your hair needs something to lubricate it.
  • Lubrication to unbraid to avoid excess tangling and breaking.
  • Lubrication to braid.
  • Spray with water or oil it. Moist hair seems to fare better at being combed and tugged whilst braiding.

Condition:
  • Condition your hair.
  • Home made or store bought conditioners.

Cradle Cap Remedy For Baby With 4c Or Tightly Coiled Hair

Cradle cap drove me crazy for a while. To the point where I had decided to let it be and just leave the baby like that as it does not hurt the baby. But it can turn into big scales which quite frankly are hard to look at.

Chances are it probably bothers you more than other people considering not a single person said a thing about it, and people had a lot of "advice".

I tried the oiling and gently brushing thing but it did not work for us. My bun was born with a full head of coiled hair, this hair is 4c - The Buns Hair. Black babies seem to be born with straight hair? I don't have much experience with this as I have seen very few newborns and most of them are always bundled up and wearing a hat. But the ones whose heads I saw had straight hair.

The using a toothbrush or baby brush obviously did not work us because her hair was coiled from the get go.

This is what worked for  us:

I use Johnson & Johnson products on

Twist Out

Jabu Stone Bees Wax
I was not planning on doing a twist out. Come to think of it I didn't. But I just had to share this, for those who have a similar hair texture to mine and want to twist out their hair it might be good. I twist my hair not for the "twist out" but as a style I keep in. I decided to try Jabu Stone Hair Products and I chose to try their Bees Wax.

This is the first time I had ever put bees wax in my hair. It smells pleasant. Its thick and "waxy" and made twisting much easier. I should add that I had just done a henna and my hair had totally reverted. I wish now that I had taken pictures! As I was untwisting that's when I noticed the waves. I didn't think much of it and only decided to take a

Longer Thicker Lashes And Eyebrows

I started this a little over a month ago an it does work. The thing about "natural remedies" is that you have to be patient. I used to give up on a lot of them if they didn't show results fast enough for me. But I have "grown" and am now more patient.

I used castor oil, mixed with nothing else. I use Khan's BP Castor oil.

I washed an old mascara wand. I just used liquid soap and warm
